The Cayenne Pepper

The cayenne pepper is long and thin bright red usually 3 to 6 inches long and about ⅜ of an inch to three quarters of an inch thick. It is a very hot pepper ( 30,000 to 50,000 Scoville units ) which makes it good for adding spice to foods. They can be used whole fresh, dried, or dried and flaked or powdered.The cayenne pepper is most commonly used to add heat food without much interfering flavor. It is also said to have many medicinal values, and to be very nutritious. It is found in the spice section in every grocery store as a powder, you can also find it whole fresh or dried form in many Oriental markets. It is sometimes made into an oil by placing the whole peppers in vegetable oil and letting them steep for a couple weeks so the oil absorbs the capsicum which is the chemical that makes the pepper hot.

The cayenne pepper is probably one of most common peppers along with the jalapeno. It is fairly easy to grow but does have a 100 per day growing period from transplant. Other than little time it just takes good moist soil and full sun.

If you grow your own cayenne pepper you can hang them in a rissta and dry them out, and then grind them into your own cayenne powder. If you do this you should be careful when handling them as the powder is very hot and will burn if it gets in to any cuts or into your eyes. Once you have ground cayenne peppers into a powder, you can store it in a tightly sealed jar for up to a year. After that it begins loses potency, so grow a few plants every year to keep your supply fresh.

Try some cayenne and spice things up a bit. It’ll bring a little sweat to your brow, and a warmth to your belly.
